A Complete Guide To Know About Paint- MDI Painting Services

Painting is from paint. And paint is any colour or combination of colours. Paint has made possible the concept of painting. What is paint, its types, and what they are made from? This article is a complete guide to know about paint.

Painting your home interior, exterior, walls, ceilings, roofs and every other place you want is possible because of paint. We all need paints from time to time, to decorate our old areas. Have you ever tried to know about paint ingredients, how it is made and what to need and what not?

If you love painting then you have to know about paints as well. Your concern does not limit to the only price of the paint and its quality but should be more than this.

So, let’s deep dive into this!

Everything To Know About Paint

What is Paint?

Paint is a combination or mixture of four fundamental elements. These four ingredients are pigments, solvents, resins, and additives.

Pigments– It is the colour or hue

Resin– It is actually a binder or also known as glue.

Solvent– It is the vehicle that makes the paint liquid and evaporates as it dries. And,

Additives– Paint quality depends upon it. It gives some specific power to paint such as mould killing or stain-blocking etc.

To your knowledge, cheap paints have a higher solvent volume as compared to better paints. That is where the quality of paint has been compromised. When the amount of resin is actually a binder to hold or strong the paint grip, so the more resin the more will be quality and vice versa.

Cheap paints have more water or mineral spirits which have a little amount of pigment ( the less colour) and evaporate very too soon. That is the main reason for cheap paint that we recoat it more than one time.

MDI Painting Services suggests not to use cheap paints. We also prefer good quality paints when painting a client’s home. Good or expensive paints need only coat your home’s walls and leave the impression and performance great and they also save you extra time.

Tip: When buying paint, look for a label that contains about 45% pigment and resins per volume.

Two Types of Paint: Water-Based vs. Oil-Based

Paint is divided into two basic types based on solvent, that is water-based and oil-based. From the name, it is clear that water-based paint has water as a solvent, but to confuse people they commonly called it “latex”, even though it does not contain it.

A large number of water-based paints are made from acrylic and are often referred to as “acrylic latex”.

On the other hand, oil-based paint is also not made with oil, but actually, has a solvent of mineral spirits or paint thinner or alkyd resin. At the paint store, alkyd or latex paint is understood as oil-based paint.

Water-Based paint

It is also known as latex paint. Water-based paint is the most common type for home use and the reasons are:

  • Water-based paint is easily cleaned up with soap and water
  • It is also environmentally friendly and contains a very small amount of volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
  • Best in performance
  • Safe from moisture and mildew
  • It is available in various colours and sheens
  • Fast-drying

Water-based paint is an allrounder in almost all applications in the home from interior to exterior walls and roofs.

Alkyd Paint

Contrary to water-based paint Alkyd paint is not as common as water-based. It is used as a home application in limited ways. Yes, it was used as the standard for bathrooms and other wet areas. Alkyd paint is easy to scrub and has a higher sheen.

Modern coatings are much more durable and moisture-resistant than traditional latex paint formulations, making them suitable for use in these areas of the home as well.

Alkyd paint is generally reserved for areas that are subject to heavy wear or are prone to impact in the home. It is typically applied to trim, flooring, and cabinets. Alkyd has the advantage of drying slowly compared to latex paint, so brush strokes are less visible. It is ideal for painting woodwork, trim, and cabinets.

Alkyd paint has also some disadvantages such as it is expensive compared to latex paint, has an intensive odour, and contains more VOCs. And you will clean up it with mineral spirits.

Note: Some local municipalities ban alkyd paint.

Paint Sheen

Paint sheen is considered a part of the proper paint. A paint sheen refers to the shiny appearance of the dried paint surface after it has dried. Five basic sheens exist flat or Matte, eggshell, Satin, Semigloss and Hi-gloss.

Flat or Matte– These paints consist of a very least amount of sheen. Flat or Matte is best for hiding any scratched areas and creates little glare. Its con is that is not washable. It is widely used in home ceilings.

Satin– Eggshell paint is just like this, but a bit glossier. Well, remember, in some scenarios, satin is used instead of eggshell.

Semigloss– This type of sheen is suitable for washable areas such as kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, and other moisture places. As compared to both satin and eggshell, semigloss is the best option for washable areas.

Gloss– It is gloss, not glass and gloss is a type of paint. Since it’s durable and highly washable, gloss paint is commonly used on doors, trim, and cabinets. In addition, it reflects a lot of light, highlighting the small details with vivid colours.

In summary, After all is said and done. It was started from what is paint, its four ingredients, its two types, and five paint sheens. We hope you enjoy it.
